Renewing your septic approval on the Central Coast: which 2026-27 council fee applies to you

For 2026-27, Central Coast Council's fee to renew a domestic septic approval to operate is listed at $86.05 (checked November 2026), further fees may apply, and your renewal falls when your own approval says it does, not on a standard cycle.

Central Coast Council's approval to operate an onsite sewage management system costs $86.05 to renew for a domestic system in the 2026-27 fee year (checked November 2026). The infringement notice for operating a sewage management system without approval is $330 (checked November 2026).

That makes the penalty notice a little under four times the renewal fee. This is our estimate: $330 ÷ $86.05 ≈ 3.8 (checked November 2026).

No standard number of years tells you when to renew. ABLIS gives the approval's duration as "As specified", which means the length is set on your own approval. Your due date is the one written there.

The rest of this guide covers which council fee fits your situation, how the fees are labelled, and why none of them is the same bill as a pump-out.

ABLIS lists four fees for the approval to operate, each labelled "Fees for 2026-27" (checked November 2026):

The same listing adds "Further fees may apply. Please consult the Contact Officer". Treat these as the listed amounts, and confirm the figure with Central Coast Council before you pay.

The council contact on the listing is 02 4306 7900 or ask@centralcoast.nsw.gov.au. The label tells you which fee year a figure belongs to. The amount on your own council notice is the one to pay.

For a domestic system, no. The $86.05 renewal fee is above the $80.30 application fee (checked November 2026). By our working, renewing costs $5.75 more ($86.05 − $80.30) (checked November 2026).

For a commercial system, yes, by a wide margin. The $149.15 renewal fee compares with $304.10 to apply (checked November 2026). By our working, that is $154.95 less, or just over half the application fee (checked November 2026).

The renewal is the fee that comes round again. It is also an easy one to lose track of, so put the date from your approval in a calendar.

When is your renewal due?

  1. Find your current approval to operate or council renewal notice.
  2. Read the term or expiry set on it (ABLIS lists the duration as "As specified").
  3. Put that date in your calendar with a reminder ahead of it.
  4. If the approval is missing or unclear, contact Central Coast Council on 02 4306 7900 or ask@centralcoast.nsw.gov.au.

Your approval sets its own term. ABLIS lists the duration only as "As specified". So the date to watch is the one on your approval certificate or council renewal notice, not a rule of thumb from a neighbour or another council.

If you have recently bought the property, the approval may not be in your name yet. Our guide to buying a house with a septic tank on the Central Coast covers the questions to ask.

If you are applying rather than renewing, the application asks you to describe how the system "will be operated, maintained, serviced" and what happens if it breaks down. Your service history is useful to have at hand.

Does a pump-out count as renewing your approval?

  3. Pump-out or service. Work on the tank. Does not replace the council approval.

A pump-out or service does not replace your council approval. The approval to operate is one of two approvals your council issues, and it carries its own fee.

The NSW Office of Local Government says owners need one approval to install the system and one to operate it. The owner is responsible for making sure the system is approved and working properly.

That leaves three separate costs, paid for three different things:

  1. The renewal fee. This goes to Central Coast Council and keeps your approval to operate current.
  2. An inspection fee. OLG says that after approval "the council will carry out regular inspections" and that councils can charge inspection fees for this service. Ask council what applies to your property.
  3. The pump-out. This is physical work on the tank, priced by whoever does it. It keeps the system working. It does not touch the paperwork.

Septic Tank Cleaning Central Coast's view is simple: keep the approval and the tank on two separate reminders. Paying one never settles the other. When the tank side is due, our septic pump-out page is the place to start.

Which fee applies if you are installing or altering a system?

  1. Putting in a new system

    1. Approval to install: domestic $854.85, commercial $1,193.35 (often granted as part of a Development Application)
    2. Approval to operate, first-time application: domestic $80.30, commercial $304.10
  2. Changing an existing system

    1. Approval to alter: domestic $298.35, commercial $585.25
  3. Keeping an approved system running

    1. Renew approval to operate when your approval specifies: domestic $86.05, commercial $149.15

Installing or changing a system needs a different approval with higher fees. The approval to install, construct or alter lists these 2026-27 fees, and adds that "Further fees may apply" (checked November 2026):

  • installing a domestic system: $854.85 (checked November 2026)
  • installing a commercial system: $1,193.35 (checked November 2026)
  • altering an existing domestic system: $298.35 (checked November 2026)
  • altering an existing commercial system: $585.25 (checked November 2026)

ABLIS says the install approval "will often be granted as part of a Development Application process". Plumbing and drainage work may only be done by people holding an endorsed contractor licence, supervisor certificate or tradesperson certificate.

What happens if a system runs without approval?

Operating a sewage management system without council approval is an offence under s626(3) of the Local Government Act 1993. The Local Court maximum is 20 penalty units, and the infringement notice amount is $330 (checked November 2026).

The approval itself sits under the Local Government Act 1993 and the Local Government (General) Regulation 2021, administered by Central Coast Council.

The Regulation behind these approvals is under review and being split into standalone instruments, including a proposed Local Government (Approvals and Orders) Regulation. Public consultation runs from 9 October to 5pm on 6 November 2026. The current Regulation auto-repeals on 1 September 2027 unless remade.

None of that changes the 2026-27 figures above. If your renewal falls after the new instruments are made, though, check the current fee schedule with council before you pay.
